FIREARMS CURIOSA

US Army prototypes, mid-20th to early-21st centuries.

A collection of rifles, machine guns and grenade launchers that were trialed with the US armed forces from around 1950 - 2010. There’s some obscure M14 variants in there, including the bullpup T-31 rifle, and also the odd-looking SPIW rifle, which was an obscure gun that fired flechette rounds. Needless to say, it was plagued with faults, including multiple incidents in which the scope of the weapon shattered whilst the firers were aiming down it, causing retina injuries (ouch!). It should be noted that while most of the prototypes shown were wholly unsuccessful, a few of them saw service.
